Roller Hemming Systems

Roller hemming is an innovative joining method which is particularly useful in the manufacture of add-on parts, i.e. car doors, hatchbacks and engine hoods. Further fields of application are the openings for sun roofs, and also the welting around wheel arches.

Generally, the hemming or welting process involves "bending" an outside panel around an interior section. Traditionally, presses with complicated punch geometries are utilised. With roller hemming, the panels are clamped in a tool bed. A roller hemming head with rollers for the various stages of the hemming process is affixed to an industrial robot.

The EDAG roller hemming systems provide a low-cost alternative to conventional pressing. Both the investment outlay and maintenance costs for roller hemming cells are lower. Another important advantage is the fact that development and initial start up do not take much time. The reason for this is that EDAG has a well-engineered spectrum of standard applications.

EDAG roller hemming systems open up new options for automobile developers, such as hemming the wheel arches on finished car bodies. This means that, even with low-scale process input, it is possible to achieve better surface quality on complex panel geometries. Stability and tolerances can be controlled, as the robot program can be influenced at certain points.

In addition, EDAG roller hemming systems are extremely flexible. Various types can be produced in one manufacturing cell. The hemming robot can also take on other tasks in the manufacturing cell. Further, there is no difficulty in re-locating roller hemming cells, e.g. moving them somewhere else to produce spare parts.

Steady development of existing applications means that new areas of application will also be opened up in the future. A High-Output process (EDHO) is currently being developed, and this will make it possible to achieve cycle times of less than 30 seconds per body part.

Standard components and fields of application

EDHS 130°
Creation of rolled welt for add-on parts, side panels and other components with a flange opening angle of 130° </= p, form flange < and wedge, flat, 130°;>

EDHS 180°
Creation of rolled welt for sun roofs in stationary fixtures, also type combinations

EDHS 180° „Floating-mounted roller hemming“
Creation of rolled welt for sun roofs and window frames in doors and hatchbacks, with a hemming gripper and stationary rollers -> savings in time and investment
